Update 5th November 2021

Covid is still very much around and causing problems.

49 Porthcawl patients have tested positive this week, all of whom have been vaccinated. Most will not be seriously ill, but we are still seeing patients very unwell due to Covid.

Please continue to follow guidance when out and about.

Remember that wearing a mask is to help others, and is a simple kindness proven to reduce spread.

If you have Covid related symptoms please have a PCR test as soon as possible

Implications for patients

To protect staff and vulnerable patients we continue to require anyone entering the building to wear a mask. If you are unable to, please let us know in advance and we will make alternative arrangements

Appointments may only be booked by telephone.

Please give as much information as possible to the receptionists to allow the doctors to prioritise your call.

We continue to see patients face to face where this is clinically indicated, but will assess each case on the telephone first.

Please use econsult if possible for issues which don’t require a consultation.

We are aware that the telephones are very busy. The level of demand is unprecedented.

We have answered 33000 telephone calls over the last 3 months.

We have fewer than 16000 patients, call numbers are very high. Please be patient, and be kind to the receptionists – the issues are not their fault!

Flu vaccines

So far we have administered approximately 5200 flu vaccines.

81% of our over 65s have had a vaccine as have 57% of our at risk 18 to 64 year olds. We are really grateful to our flu vaccine team who are working so hard.

Some numbers

Porthcawl Group practice has 15668 patients

We are fortunate to have 9.75 whole time equivalent doctors in the practice as well as registrars.

Our doctor to patient ratio is 1 full time GP for every 1607 patients. The average across England is 1 for every 2038 patients. This means we have more doctors per patient than the average by some way.

Contrary to media reports we have continued to be open and seeing patients throughout the pandemic, and we continue to see patients face to face as needed.

There is a very supportive community spirit in Porthcawl, and we are grateful for that. The pressures on services across the NHS are huge at present and workload is very high. Thank you for your support and patience.

Please continue to follow the covid guidance
